TITLE: A selective Attention Test as a Predictor of Success in Flight Training.
PUBLISHER: Human Factors, 1982, 24(2), 173-183.
KEYWORDS: dichotic listening, rapid switching, predictive

SUMMARY: Presents a dichotic listening test that predicts success in cadet flight training. It was given as part of an elaborate battery of tests in the Israeli Air Force. Subjects were required to detect digit names in the relevant channel and to switch channels upon indication.  Three types of errors were possible: omissions, intrusions, and switching errors.  Successful cadets had significantly lower error rates that those cadets that were dropped from the training program.  Attention capabilities appear to be an independent dimension that enhances the predicative validity of existing test batteries.

 SIGNIFICANT CONCEPTS/EXCERPTS:

The ability to perform well on this test, a dichotic listening task, may be evidence that pilots who have the ability to switch tasks quickly, and are not distracted by other stimuli, may perform CTM better.
