TITLE: Investigating Interruptions: An Example from the Flightdeck.
PUBLISHER: Proceedings of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society 40th Annual Meeting, 1996, pp. 249 - 253.
KEYWORDS: interruptions, momentum, simulator study, errors

SUMMARY: How interruptions affect performance. May be very useful for the "task momentum" factor.

Research Question: to what extent do interruptions disrupt pilot activity on the flightdeck?

Dependent Measures: procedure performance errors, procedure performance time ensemble FPM (Flight Path Management) Activity.

Results: Error rates were very low, but interrupted procedures contained significantly more, on average 53% more, procedure performance errors than uninterrupted procedures.

ATC interruptions significantly increased performance errors in the flightdeck procedures.

Interruptions did not degrade subjects’ speed in performing ongoing procedural tasks.
